Wow. I feel like you have jumped into my mind and stole my thoughts exactly. I graduated with my BFA in painting and printmaking last December I felt this then and now. What I learned in art school was mostly from my fellow students and having a community of artists to bounce ideas off of and discuss what art meant to us.

Before our final show, during our senior seminar we were supposed to start preparing for life outside art school but they simply didn't teach us anything other than how to prosper in the academic setting. Everyone was frustrated and honestly probably a bit scared. I was also pissed, so I asked my classmates and myself what we wanted to learn before we graduated. Handed the list to the professor and said, "teach us this."

He touched on many of them but one thing he said, and I am finding out that it is so true, is "everyone's path is different, but if artmaking is something you want to do, keep doing it."

Now, without the same community of artists, I've had to go it alone but I really should write down all the things I am learning that they never thought to tell us. Maybe I wouldn't have believed them if they did.
