We love both the photography and illustration work of art school student Lauren Stratton that we decided to showcase both mediums, along with a fun little interview. So check it out!
Where do you go to school?
I go to school at Utah Valley University, I just transferred there.
How is school treating you?
For the most part, I love school. I love having projects to do. This past semester was great for my photography because my professor let us experiment and I learned a lot.
How did you decide on photography AND illustration as a major?
I was originally planning on majoring in graphic design. I took photo in order to get out of taking ceramics, I took an illustration class just for fun. In both areas I had professors encouraging me. I loved both and I couldn't choose between them, so I've chosen to do both.
My style is....
Whatever I'm in the mood for. Sometimes it's dreamy, sometimes it's dark.
What's your method of working?
My method of working changes--usually I am inspired by words, music, or a photo; tthen scenes just start to appear in my head and I try to make them. They never turn out quite as beautiful as they are in my mind.
Have any obsessions?
I have so many obsessions! For the moment they are the sky, graph paper, All Things Alice (by Linda Sunshine), dreamcatchers, watercolor, Harry Potter, graffiti, mustaches, magazines, Elvis Perkins in Dearland, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, camping, gocco, and copy machines.
Guilty procrastination causing pleasures?
Too often I procrastinate because I get lost looking at inspirational images, being with friends, daydreaming, and riding my bike.
How do you get motivated?
Different things motivate me. I'm usually quite driven when it comes to art because I have so many ideas and I feel like I will never get around to making most of them. I think what motivates me the most is taking a break from everything - I begin to miss it and go crazy staying up all hours of the night working on projects.
In 5 years I.... I hope to be graduated from college, making the most of my education and passion! Preferably living somewhere different from where I am now.
Right now I am....
Having fun making art for myself -- not for any assignment or for anyone else.
My biggest concern is...
Whether or not I should sleep on the trampoline tonight. I have such a hard life!
Sharing is caring; have any art friends?
I don't have many art friends, but I do have two I would recommend. Here are their websites:
